A braked hand winch gives controlled raising and lowering rather than relying on a simple ratchet pawl. Sherpa's braked hand winches use an automatic load-pressure brake that holds the load when the handle is released, making them useful for applications such as davits, adjustable keels and boat trailers where controlled movement matters. The brake does not remove the need to stay within the winch's rated capacity or to secure the load independently where the application requires it. Selection should consider line pull, drum capacity, rope or cable type and the direction of the load. A hand winch intended for lifting or lowering should never be substituted with an unbraked trailer winch.

Stainless construction is particularly attractive around salt water, boat trailers and exposed marine installations because it resists corrosion and reduces ongoing maintenance. Sherpa's stainless range uses 304 stainless steel. Heavy-duty non-stainless models can be well suited to workshops, farms, trailers and protected industrial applications where capacity and value are the priority. Whichever construction is used, rinse salt contamination away, lubricate moving components as specified and inspect fasteners, drum and brake parts for corrosion. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant rather than maintenance free, especially where dissimilar metals, salt deposits or crevices remain wet.

Some Sherpa braked hand winches are specifically designed for controlled raising and lowering applications and use an automatic pressure brake. However, lifting suitability depends on the exact model, rated load and the way the winch is mounted. Do not assume every trailer winch or recovery winch is a lifting device. Check the product manual for the allowable application and never use a winch for lifting people. The mounting structure, cable or strap, sheaves and attachment points must all be rated for the load, and suspended loads should not be left relying solely on the winch where secondary support is required. If the application is safety-critical, have the complete system engineered rather than selecting by winch capacity alone.

An automatic load-pressure brake is designed to remain engaged so the load cannot run away when the operator releases the handle. On Sherpa's stainless braked hand winches, this means there is no conventional disengage or free-spool function. The handle must be wound to pay cable or strap out under control. This is a deliberate safety characteristic for davits, keels and other raising/lowering duties, although it can feel different to a basic boat trailer winch with a ratchet and free spool. Before fitting one as a trailer replacement, make sure controlled wind-out suits the way the boat is launched and retrieved.

Keep the winch clean and inspect the brake, handle, gears, shaft, drum and mounting bolts before heavy use. Follow the Sherpa manual for lubrication points because putting grease or oil onto friction surfaces can reduce brake performance. Check rope, cable or webbing for wear where it leaves the drum and make sure it layers evenly rather than wedging against a flange. Marine winches should be rinsed with fresh water after salt exposure and allowed to dry. If the handle becomes unusually hard to turn, the brake slips, gears jump or the drum develops side play, stop using the winch under load until the cause is identified. Brake components are safety-critical and should not be modified to make the winch free-spool.
