There is no single off-road tyre pressure that suits every vehicle. The correct pressure depends on tyre construction, vehicle weight, load, speed and terrain. Lower pressure increases the tyre footprint and can improve traction and ride comfort, but going too low increases the risk of bead unseating, sidewall damage and heat. Reduce pressure progressively and observe how the tyre behaves rather than copying another vehicle's number. Once back on firm surfaces, reinflate before sustained road speed. A quality gauge and compressor are essential because tyre pressure often changes again as the tyres heat. Follow tyre and vehicle manufacturer limits and use conservative speeds when running reduced pressures.

Large tyres contain more air volume, so a low-output compressor may take a long time to restore road pressure after beach or trail driving. A high-flow unit can cut inflation time considerably, especially across four 33–37 inch tyres or when several vehicles are being serviced. However, litres per minute should be considered alongside duty cycle and airflow at pressure. A compressor that is very fast at zero pressure may slow substantially as tyre pressure rises. Hose bore, inflator valve and electrical supply also matter. If the compressor draws high current through a poor connection, real performance may be lower than the specification suggests.

Quality digital gauges can be very accurate, but they still need periodic checking. Rough handling, moisture, flat batteries and sensor drift can affect readings. Compare the gauge with a known reference at several pressures, not only around 30psi. If two gauges disagree, do not assume the digital unit is automatically correct. Keep the chuck square on the tyre valve because a leaking connection can make the displayed pressure unstable. When airing down, remember that tyre temperature changes pressure; a tyre that has just driven on hot bitumen may read several psi higher than it will when cold.

Not necessarily. Axle loads can differ substantially, particularly on utes, tow vehicles and heavily loaded touring 4WDs. The rear tyres may carry far more weight than the fronts, so the ideal pressure can differ by axle. Terrain and tyre size also affect the result. Use starting pressures as a guide, then assess tyre bulge, steering feel and traction. Avoid reducing pressure so far that the rim is vulnerable or the bead becomes unstable. Reinflation for road use should return to pressures appropriate for the actual loaded vehicle, not an arbitrary figure copied from the door placard without considering accessories or payload.

Carry a reliable compressor, accurate pressure gauge or digital inflator, tyre deflators, valve tools and a puncture-repair kit appropriate for tubeless tyres. A long air hose is useful on larger vehicles and trailers so the compressor can remain connected to a suitable power source. Check the compressor fuse and power leads before leaving and make sure the hose fittings actually match. A spare valve core and caps take almost no space. Air down before the vehicle is bogged rather than after, and leave enough compressor capacity to reinflate all tyres at the end of the beach run. If towing, remember the trailer tyres may also need pressure management.
