At minimum, carry rated gloves, a tree trunk protector, suitable shackles or soft shackles, a winch damper and a device for changing direction or creating a double-line pull, such as a correctly rated snatch block or recovery ring. A winch extension strap is useful when the nearest anchor is beyond the rope length. A wireless remote can improve visibility by allowing the operator to stand where the rope, vehicle and anchor can be observed, but the wired control should still be available as backup. Your accessory ratings should suit the winch and vehicle, and the recovery points on the vehicle must also be properly rated. The goal is to have enough options to rig a controlled recovery rather than improvising with towing hardware.

Both can redirect a winch line or create a double-line pull, but they interact with the rope differently. A traditional snatch block uses a rotating pulley and Sherpa's 10T model can be used with steel cable or synthetic rope. A recovery ring is a low-friction ring designed primarily for synthetic rope and soft shackles. Sherpa's 10T recovery ring accepts synthetic winch rope from 8mm up to 22mm. Recovery rings are compact and have no moving bearings, while pulley blocks can be advantageous where steel cable is used or where very low rolling resistance is desired. Whichever type you choose, match its rating to the recovery load and use connectors and anchor points that are equally suitable.

Wrapping winch rope or cable directly around a tree can damage both the tree and the line. A wide tree trunk protector spreads the load over a larger area and creates a controlled anchor point for a shackle, soft shackle, snatch block or recovery ring. Sherpa's tree protector is specifically intended for static recovery anchoring and is not a towing or lifting sling. Select a healthy, appropriately sized tree and position the strap low around the trunk where practical. Check that bark, sharp edges or debris cannot cut the strap. If there is any doubt about the anchor, choose another recovery method rather than simply adding more pulling force.

A damper is most critical with steel cable because the cable stores energy and has significant mass if it fails. Synthetic rope is lighter and generally stores less dangerous recoil energy, but it can still fail under load and connected hardware can become a projectile. Using a damper or another suitable weighted safety device remains a sensible precaution, particularly if the recovery setup includes steel shackles or hooks. More importantly, keep people clear of the winch line and never step over a loaded rope or cable. A damper is not a substitute for correct rigging, rated recovery points and safe exclusion zones.

Match the remote kit to the winch control system, voltage and plug arrangement. Sherpa uses different control systems across 4WD, ATV, boat and 240/415V winches, so a remote that physically resembles another model is not automatically compatible. Some kits plug directly into an existing Sherpa control socket, while others include a receiver that must be wired into the contactor or control box. Check the winch model number and photographs of the existing remote socket before ordering. After installation, test both in and out directions with the winch unloaded and keep the wired remote accessible. Wireless control improves operator positioning but should not be relied on as the only means of stopping a winch.
