Reliable. Durable. Ready for Anything.
Complementing our custom 4x4 recovery winches, Sherpa also manufactures a high-quality All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) winch. Designed specifically for quad bikes, this winch comes equipped with 12 m of synthetic rope, a planetary gearbox, and a purpose-built motor capable of handling up to 4,500lb.
Why ATV owners choose Sherpa:
Recover from bogs, mud, rivers, and steep inclines
Drag logs, straighten fence posts, or assist with farming tasks
Provides peace of mind when off the beaten track or far from help
Simple to install and operate, yet heavy-duty and built to last
Take your ATV to new heights with a Sherpa winch engineered for reliability when you need it most. Free and fast shipping throughout Australia.
For most ATVs and quad bikes, a 4,500lb winch provides a substantial recovery margin relative to vehicle weight, but terrain can multiply the load. Deep mud, steep grades and a buried chassis can require much more force than rolling weight alone. Sherpa's ATV winch is 12V, rated to 4,500lb and supplied with synthetic rope. For heavier side-by-sides, farm equipment or a machine carrying large loads, check actual gross weight and recovery conditions rather than assuming any ATV-labelled winch is adequate. A correctly rated pulley can reduce winch load in difficult recoveries, provided the anchor and rigging are also suitable.
Use a model-specific winch plate or a properly engineered cradle tied into the ATV or side-by-side chassis. The mounting plate needs to resist the full winch load without bending and must align the fairlead with the centre of the drum. Avoid mounting through thin bumper skins or racks not designed for recovery loads. Check clearance to steering, suspension and radiator airflow, and route cables away from exhaust heat and moving components. Because an ATV front end is compact, access to the clutch lever and rope drum can easily be lost if the winch is positioned too high or too deep. Tighten mounting hardware to the recommended torque and recheck it after the first few loaded uses.
ATV batteries and charging systems are much smaller than those in full-size 4WDs, so electrical management is important. The engine should normally be running during recovery if safe and consistent with the winch instructions, but the charging system may still not replace energy as fast as the winch uses it. Make short controlled pulls and allow recovery time rather than holding the winch at heavy load continuously. Ensure the battery is healthy and use the supplied cable size and direct high-current connections. A weak earth or small replacement cable can cause major voltage drop. If the machine repeatedly struggles electrically, do not fit larger fuses or bypass protection; test the battery and charging system first.
A hitch mount allows a compatible small winch to be mounted to a receiver-style point rather than permanently buried in one location. It can be useful on farm vehicles, trailers or equipment where the winch needs to move between positions, provided the receiver and hitch pin are rated for the pulling load. The electrical connection must also be designed for the winch current, usually with a high-current quick connector rather than a light accessory socket. A portable mounting arrangement does not increase the rating of the vehicle's receiver or change safe pulling geometry. Keep the pull in line with the mount and avoid side-loading a receiver not engineered for it.
Small-diameter ATV rope can be damaged quickly by sand, mud and sharp fairlead edges. After a dirty recovery, unwind it, rinse with clean water and allow it to dry before respooling under light, even tension. Inspect the first few metres carefully because that section sees the most abrasion around anchors and vegetation. Check the hawse fairlead for burrs or impact damage and make sure the rope does not rub the bumper or mount at extreme pull angles. Do not allow loose rope to bird-nest deep in the drum where it can pinch itself under the next heavy pull. Replace rope showing melted fibres, severe fuzzing, cuts or flattened damaged sections.
