Retrieving a heavy boat onto a trailer shouldn’t be the hardest part of your day on the water. When you’re dealing with larger boats, steep ramps and repeated launches, you need a trailer winch that delivers serious pulling power, fast retrieval speeds and dependable performance.
That’s exactly why Sherpa 4x4 developed the ‘Grunter’ Electric Boat Trailer Winch.
Purpose-built specifically for boat trailer recovery, the Grunter combines the rugged construction and proven winch technology Sherpa 4x4 is known for with a high-speed, powerful design engineered for demanding marine applications.

Unlike many electric trailer winches adapted from lighter-duty applications, the Sherpa Grunter was designed from the ground up with one primary job in mind – pulling boats onto trailers.
The standard Grunter is rated for boats weighing up to 4,500kg, while the available HP model is designed for larger boats from approximately 4,500kg to 9,000kg.
Whether you're retrieving a fishing boat, offshore vessel or other heavy trailer-mounted craft, the Grunter provides the combination of speed, strength and control needed to make launching and retrieval considerably easier.
At the heart of the Grunter is a powerful 6.6HP series-wound motor, available in both 12V and 24V configurations.
Using an oversized motor allows the winch to produce serious pulling power without constantly operating at its limits. This helps reduce heat build-up during operation and contributes to increased reliability and service life.
The standard model offers a rated winching capacity of up to 4,545kg / 10,000lb, while the HP version increases capacity to approximately 7,200kg / 17,000lb.
Nobody wants to spend unnecessary time standing on a boat ramp.
The Grunter has been geared specifically to provide an excellent balance between line speed, pulling power and electrical current draw.
Under no load, the 12V standard model can achieve line speeds of approximately 12.5 metres per minute, allowing significantly faster retrieval compared with many conventional electric boat trailer winches. As the load increases, the purpose-designed planetary gearbox continues delivering controlled pulling power.
For exceptionally heavy boats or trailers without rollers, the Grunter HP model sacrifices some line speed in favour of substantially increased pulling power.
The Grunter uses a purpose-designed three-stage planetary gearbox featuring quality cut gears.
The gearing has been specifically selected for boat retrieval applications, providing the right balance between:
High retrieval speed
Strong pulling performance
Controlled current draw
Reliable operation under load
The winch also provides power-in, power-out and free-spool operation, making launching and retrieving straightforward.
Controlling several tonnes of boat on a sloping ramp demands a dependable braking system.
Sherpa developed a dedicated electric motor brake for the Grunter. The brake automatically releases while powering the winch in or out and immediately engages when the control button is released.
This provides positive load control during retrieval and makes the design particularly well suited to boat ramp conditions.
Electrical reliability is critical when a winch is drawing hundreds of amps.
That’s why the Grunter uses a genuine Albright International heavy-duty solenoid, rather than cheaper generic contactors commonly found in lower-cost winches.
The Grunter's control system incorporates an Albright solenoid rated up to 800 amps, providing substantial electrical capacity for demanding winching applications.
Boat trailers operate in one of the harshest environments possible. Water, salt, sand and corrosion can quickly expose weaknesses in poorly constructed equipment.
The Sherpa Grunter incorporates features specifically chosen for marine use, including:
IP68-rated construction
316 stainless steel fittings, cross members and drum
Corrosion-resistant aluminium winch body
Waterproof wired hand controller
Heavy-duty electrical components
Protective winch cover supplied as standard
These features help make the Grunter suitable for the demanding conditions encountered around boat ramps and marine environments.
Rather than traditional steel cable, the Grunter is supplied standard with 10 metres of heavy-duty 50mm webbing strap, rated to approximately 11,000lb.
The wide webbing provides a clean and practical solution for boat trailer applications and suits a broad range of trailer configurations.
For customers who prefer rope, an optional 12m x 7mm synthetic rope kit is also available.
The Grunter is supplied with the major components required for installation, including:
7m positive power cable
Heavy-duty vehicle-to-trailer plug set
Control box
Waterproof wired hand remote
Winch cover
Mounting hardware and brackets
The supplied 7-metre power cable is designed to accommodate larger vehicles such as a Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series, while longer cable options can be arranged for larger vehicles and American-style trucks.
Professional installation by a qualified auto electrician is recommended, particularly due to the high current demands of the winch.
The Grunter is a serious high-current winch and needs to be installed and operated accordingly.
The vehicle engine must be running whenever the winch is being operated.
The winch must not be powered from a standalone battery that is not simultaneously being charged by the vehicle alternator. Operating the winch from an inadequately supported battery supply can damage the winch and may void the warranty.
For additional electrical safety, Sherpa 4x4 also recommends installing a suitably rated battery isolation switch.
For the majority of trailer boats, the standard Grunter provides an excellent combination of high retrieval speed and strong pulling capacity.
The Grunter HP is geared lower to produce substantially more pulling power and is aimed at:
Boats approximately 4,500kg to 9,000kg
Large offshore boats
Heavy commercial vessels
Steeper boat ramps
Trailers with increased rolling resistance
Boats being dragged onto trailers without effective rollers
Choosing the appropriate model ensures the best balance between recovery speed and pulling performance for your boat and trailer combination.
Sherpa 4x4 has built its reputation around producing winches designed for demanding Australian conditions, and the Grunter applies that experience directly to the marine market.
The winch is backed by a 5-year warranty, with replacement parts and technical support available locally in Australia.
After a long day fishing, cruising or exploring offshore, the last thing you want is to fight with an underpowered trailer winch at the ramp.
The Sherpa 4x4 Grunter Electric Boat Trailer Winch delivers the speed, power and durability needed to retrieve serious boats with confidence.
With its powerful 6.6HP motor, genuine Albright electrics, stainless steel components, IP68-rated construction and purpose-built marine gearbox, the Grunter is designed for boat owners who demand more from their equipment.
Spend less time winching and more time on the water. Choose the Sherpa 4x4 Grunter.
